Just as the poor have certain character traits that when accumulated over time leads to their state of poverty, the rich or affluent in our society likewise have certain habits and principles they follow religiously that lead to their state. These habits or principles of the rich are simple, easy and thus effective when applied. Following or applying them can lead you to your financial success or freedom. Financial success comes as a result of practicing some specific habits repetitively until the desired financial breakthrough is attained. If you practice or follow the actions of successful people, you will definitely get the same results. In the following paragraphs, I am going to briefly mention ten (10) success secrets or habits of the rich and affluent in society.
The first trait of the rich is that they dream big dreams.
All rich people imagine and fantasize about the kind of life they want to live
i.e something which is wonderful and different from what you have today. The
rich always create a vision for themselves into the future; a clear mental
picture of where they are heading in life. This is what makes them more positive,
motivated and more determined to get there.

What follows the dream is that the rich break up their dream
into clear, specific written goals and objectives which they follow for the
realization of their dreams. This is what we call a clear sense of direction.
Next, the rich usually think and talk about these goals all the time which they
well execute by writing them down clearly and specifically. As the saying goes,
“You are what you think and talk’, they will eventually get there.
The next is the rich have a believe that, they are the only
ones who can drive the vehicle to their destination. They have the true picture
of what they want to be, where they want to be and how they want to be. They
believe that others can only come in to assist. Thus the rich see themselves in
the first place as self employed and know that the surest, fastest and reliable
way to achieve their dreams is my establishing businesses, developing a talent
or letting money work for them and creating multiple streams of income. That is
to say, they create a system that can work and generate money for them while
they sleep. Warren Buffet, one of the richest guys put it the right way, “if
you don’t learn how to make money while you sleep, you will work till you die”.
In other words, create a system and let it draw in money.
Another characteristic of the rich is that they do what they love to do. The system the rich create to bring in money is something they are happy about pursuing. Nobody forces them into it. It is a discovery of their natural abilities and God given talents. If a rich man will wake up early in the morning to join traffic for work, it is not that if he doesn’t do so, his bosses will yell at them or they will get fired, but it is because there is an inner zeal and commitment towards excellence in approaching their own dreams. Most of the rich can work at anytime, from anywhere and anyhow as what they do is something they enjoy doing. So being able to discover your special talents, interests and abilities is a primary responsibility in life that If concentrated on could ultimately lead to financial success. Usually, these abilities, interests and talents when discovered and directed towards the strong needs and desires of others will eventually result into huge demand for your products or services. The money then flows in naturally after this stage. My advice to you is to look for a field or area (job or business) that fascinates you, holds your attention and are a natural expression of your talents and abilities.
Determination, dedication and hard work eventually lead to success. This is one of the traits of the rich as commitment to excellence is their hallmark. Every rich person has a strong desire to succeed. Due to this, they through hard work and dedication strive to achieve their goals. Their ultimate joy is in their self-esteem, self-respect and personal pride with the belief that when you are really good at what you do, you feel wonderful, happy and proud about it. With these in mind, the rich work long hours starting earlier and staying later. They are mostly the first to get to office and the last to leave. The key is work all the time you work and when you work, don’t waste time.
Moreover, the rich dedicate themselves to lifelong learning
as this is the minimum requirement for success. Knowledge breeds confidence in
a particular field. Through learning, more ideas and techniques come up which
helps to strategize and improve upon an existing methodology. The rich learn
everyday through reading, listening to audio books on their field and attending
courses, seminars and training.
Also, the rich are good at paying themselves first before
everyone else. When a rich man gets his net income, he first sets aside a
percentage (At least 10%; I recommend between 10-25%) before spending the rest.
He does not spend first before reserving for himself the remainder. Remember
that whatever you spend is money you give to everybody but yourself. If you buy
a shirt, you are minding the business of the shirt owner and helping it to grow.
What about your own business? What you put down for yourself must eventually
grow to become an investment which must further yield more interest or generate
more profit. If you save and later consume, it is COS 90 (i.e 0). You have achieved
nothing. But if you accumulate it and further use it to acquire more assets
that can generate more income for you, then you are on your way to getting
rich. According to Robert Kiyosaki in his book, ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’, the rich
spend greater percentage of their income looking for and buying more assets
whilst the poor concentrate on acquiring more responsibilities, mainly through
impulse buying or unplanned purchases.
This is the ability to do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not. This is how Elbert Hubbard defines Self-Discipline. Notable among the habits of the rich is self-discipline and it is the most important single quality for success in life. Through discipline the rich create dreams, set goals, objectives and guidelines and stick to them. Through discipline, the rich focus on their own goals and are not swayed by other interests along the line. Through discipline, the rich are able to save a sizeable portion of their income over a long period of time and invests them further to expand their businesses and leave a legacy for their children. The key to becoming a wealthy person is having a long time perspective combined with the ability to delay gratification in the short term. In other words, it is your ability to set a long-term goal of becoming financially independent and then to discipline yourself, every single day and with every single expenditure, to do only those things that will guarantee that you ultimately achieve your long-term goal.
One more quality of the rich is that they develop the right
relationships both personally and in their business. They are good at
networking and making strategic friendships. Birds of the same feathers flock
together. Show me your friend and I will show you your character, so the
sayings go. Successful people make a habit of building and maintaining a
network of high quality relationships throughout their lives, and as a result,
they accomplish vastly more than the person who goes home and watches
television each night. Rich people join their industry and trade associates,
attend every meeting and get involved in group activities. They introduce
themselves to people in business and social settings, hand out their business cards
and tell others what they do.
The last but not the least, the rich are risk takers. They are quick to identify opportunities and seize them. They keep trying, trying and trying until they succeed. They are decisive and they try far more things, than other people do. Unlike the rich, the poor see an opportunity and the first thing that comes to mind is the fear of failure, and so never attempts. The rich are swift and decisive whilst unsuccessful people are indecisive. When you become decisive and action oriented, you shift your entire life into gear.
I will conclude this piece by emphasizing that, you can
learn every one of the above principles by constant practice and repetition,
over and over again. Practice they say makes perfect. Just as we learn how to
ride a bicycle we can also learn these ways and success secrets of the self
made millionaires. One thing you must
note is that, nothing comes easy on a silver platter. You must work hard at it.
Thus, you must embrace self control, dedication, perseverance, discipline and
have a high sense of responsibility. Remember that, anything or behavior that
is not your habit from birth will not flow naturally. This presupposes that
conscious effort and strong will and zeal are thus required in order to attain
this feat.
